The Kings of... series pays homage not to ‘lost’ musical genres but to music that ‘fits’ within a specific genre which may have either been forgotten, or that may only now be remembered for the first time and compiled by two artists mad on music who choose their top tracks of the moment.
For the third in the ‘Kings Of ..’ series, we are mighty proud to present over two mixed CDs, a journey into the music that helped ‘shape’ what we know as Hip Hop today (CD 1), and a journey into the music shaped by that music (CD 2).
What is Hip Hop ?
If one youth movement has been pre-eminent in the shaping of popular culture in the last twenty-five years, it is Hip Hop. Born in the mid 70’s as a soundtrack to block parties in New York it spread across America and then the world constantly evolving & reinventing itself. From Afrika Bambaataa’s Zulu Nation to Gangsta Rap, Hip Hop has been used as party music as well as protest music, to provoke and to enlighten. Today it is a multi-million-pound industry that dominates record sales worldwide and influences international fashion, language and youth culture.
It depends who you ask but this was one of the ‘better’ insights:
‘Hip Hop to me is not just a way of life, it’s a culture. This culture is comprised of so many different elements, so many things that are changeable and other things that are just unspoken, things that are just felt. It’s a very kinetic culture’.
